Kind of a bizarre post in general, but especially so in that you included 670 and 1000 as examples of "wasted signals?" But, I guess "opinions will vary."
If those signals are being "wasted," what's your suggestion for a better use? What's going to earn their owners more money from a station on a dead band? Big band music? Bzzzzzzt.
I don't think many Cubs fans who enjoy listening to Pat & Ron on the radio think 670's a waste. I certainly don't. I've actually been listening to more sports talk radio of late (news lately is just too depressing, to be honest) and I like the Score. Their coverage of the Bears new coach and recent NFL combine was great.
I don't listen to 1000 as much, but they're only the radio home of the Bears and White Sox and have some good local hosts in David Kaplan (mornings) and Waddle & Silvy in PM drive. What a waste!
I don't listen to any of the other local AM stations - even 780, which I see is not on your list. That's one you could argue is indeed a waste, since it's already on FM and the vast majority of listenership is on 105.9. Listeners outside of Chicago don't pay the bills. I guess there's a few hours a year where they break the simulcast to air sports on AM. Whoopie.
The only Chicago station I tend to think of as a waste is WBBM-FM. I haven't listened in a while because for years it's seemed like such a bad radio station. A Top 40 station with zero personality, and meh music selection. Maybe that's why Kiss FM has been kicking their ass for years.
