It may seem crazy to some, but with Marquee Sports Network's deal expiring with Comcast/Xfinity & CHSN unable to find much footing with the city's top cable system regarding distribution, there's talk behind the scenes of a possible Marquee/CHSN merger in the coming months.
First reported by the Sun-Times' Jeff Agrest Tuesday & picked up by Puck's John Ourand & Awful Announcing, the talk of a Marquee/CHSN merger comes as Comcast/Xfinity wants to put the new CHSN on its most expensive tier. There's also an issue regarding pricing.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, which handles distribution for Marquee, has been trying to work out a new deal with Comcast since the end of the MLB season. They're also trying to negotiate new carriage deals for the many local stations the Maryland-based Sinclair also owns, too.
In the meantime, many Bulls & Blackhawks' fans in Chicago still can't watch their teams' games on CHSN. Many fans have also been frustrated regarding the use of an antenna to watch the games on WJYS 62.2 & 62.3 over the air since CHSN launched in October.
It remains to be seen if a possible merger ultimately paves the way for Bulls, Blackhawks & White Sox fans to get CHSN on the city's largest cable system, let alone Cubs' fans on Marquee from possibly being shut out themselves.
Although Agrest says that he doubts the 2 networks would merge, everything you need to know can be found here...If you can get through the paywalls:
