Sunday, June 23 marks the 40th Anniversary of Ryne Sandberg's memorable 2 homer game for the Cubs in a nationally televised game vs the St.Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Although the Cubs will be hosting the New York Mets on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" this year, the Cubs' broadcast partners are planning special coverage as the Baseball Hall of Fame second baseman will receive a special honor.

Sandberg will be honored with a statue outside Wrigley. He will be the fifth such former player in franchise history to receive a statue joining Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Ernie Banks & Ron
Santo at Statue Row. Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray also has a statue outside the legendary "Friendly Confines", too.

To coincide with the event, 670 AM The SCORE & Marquee Sports Network are planning special coverage. First, the Cubs Radio Network flagship presents "A Salute to Sandberg" with host Mark Grote at 6P (CT) Friday night. Grote will be joined by Sandberg himself, along with former teammate Andre Dawson and others. The "Salute" will be rebroadcast at 4P (CT) Sunday before the Mets/Cubs' game.

Second, Marquee is planning a special Sunday of Sandberg-related programming, such as 2 episodes of "Cubs Classics" featuring the June 23, 1984 game vs St. Louis originally aired on NBC along with Sandberg's final game in a Cub uniform vs Philadelphia on September 21, 1997.

That will be followed by Marquee's live coverage of the Sandberg statue ceremony at 3P (CT) Sunday afternoon. Host Cole Wright will be joined by Cubs' Chairman Tom Ricketts, former Cub teammates Larry Bowa & Shawon Dunston as well as Bob Costas. Bob called the 6/23/84 game vs the Cardinals on NBC with Tony Kubek and has plenty of stories to tell.

As for Sunday's game itself vs the Mets, ESPN won't have to look far to find its play by play voice with Karl Ravech on assignment covering the College World Series this weekend in Omaha on ESPN & ABC respectively. Jon "Boog" Sciambi, who is the Cubs' PBP voice on Marquee and lead radio voice for ESPN Radio's national broadcast, will pinch hit for Ravech this Sunday night @ 6:10P (CT). David Cone, Eduardo Perez & Buster Olney will join "Boog" on the TV broadcast while Roxy Bernstein subs on ESPN Radio outside Chicago with Doug Glanville.
