The current research shows that classic/retro/old school dance is not generationally compatible with today's youth. A lot of it is hip hop influenced, instrumentals, etc.
Also, the younger generation is not consuming off of terrestrial radio. It is online.
One point I can indicate. When I was 18, we DANCED at mixmaster events, concerts, clubs. Today's youth, sit and watch the DJ, waving lights and other nonsense. Lol. Totally different lifestyle.
In a good world, you would have 1 company with 2 stations. 1 is currents based and 1 is classic based. You will hope when your audience tunes out, they will go to your other station. Sadly in the US, if it is not hip hop it is not recognized. In 1993 I had a PD of a Chicago FM music station tell me "Dance music is for the Gays and Crossdressers. No one else will listen to it". That person also told me "Top40 is dead and will never come back". (Proof positive how incompetent people climb the ranks either being YES men or having other talents, requiring them not to be standing to perform). That person is now retired, but they were living life with head in the sand, as B96 was on top of its game at that time.
