Schriffen's first month on the job as the Sox new TV play-by-play voice hasn't exactly been a smooth one. The reviews have been lukewarm and one of those critics is 670 AM The SCORE afternoon co-host Matt Spiegel.
On Opening Day vs Detroit, Schriffen didn't understand why Sox fans booed Tigers SS Javier Baez, who played for the crosstown Cubs for 8 seasons. Schriffen also referred to Kansas City Royals' Manager Matt Quatraro as a "head coach". Keep in mind that Schriffen is one of ESPN's many College Basketball voices during MLB's offseason, much like Benetti does for FOX Sports.
Schriffen also came under criticism for the use of the word "haters" when describing an Andrew Benintendi game winning home run to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in extra innings about a week ago. What haters?! If there's any hate, it's the fact the White Sox are off to their worst start in franchise history.
What might have irritated Spiegel most of all was that Schriffen pronounced former owner Bill Veeck's name as "veek", not "Wreck" in describing a fact in Sox history during last Thursday's game vs the Minnesota Twins.
To make matters worse, Schriffen is suddenly NOT doing interviews with either ESPN 1000 AM, the White Sox flagship radio station, or The SCORE.
As for Spiegel's criticism of Schriffen, it sounds like this:
