In the recent past, their iconic DJs would announce their various music sets were handpicked.
I'm reminded of a David Bowie song which contains the lyric: "I am a DJ., I am what I play."
I'm wondering how much freedom the jocks truly have in crafting their shows. It's understood, certain songs have to be played. After all, there is a sea of new music which must be mixed with the classics. One might say there's a little too much classic rock being played, but this could be subjective.
My thinking here is there is a list of authorized songs which can be played next to must-played songs. Listeners demand the same station on the ride to work as equal to the ride home 8 or 9 hours later. Sunday nights used to feature Jazz shows which have since left the airwaves.
Who remembers the Friday Feature?
Greg Solk has been widely credited with elevating WXRT's ratings and revenue.
To illustrate my inquiry, the DJs are assigned a given year for Saturday Morning Flashback. I'd like to know if the given playlist has already been chosen by Greg or if there is some flexibility for the on-air talent.
Thank you.
