The whole industry has had their heads in the sand for years. There is no competition to a USB thumb drive. Pandora. YouTube. Any thing commercial free. That is why EVERY younger demo format is in the 🚽. It will *not* turn around. Covid just hastened the decline slope. Under 40, they will say what is the "AM Band"? These young kids might get exposed when listening in a parents car. But they are NOT P1 listeners, nor will they ever be P1.
The industry is totally at fault with this, they thought ignoring MP3's when they came on scene late 90s was a fad. They thought streaming and high speed internet on mobile devices was a fad. Their answer? Go to the hard drive, automation, the Bird, run lockless and voice track sometimes live casting across the nation. Great Job! Slay the only thing that differentiated you from everyone else, your personalities aka DJ's.
I can't tell you how many times I heard from industry folk that current Dance music (non hip hop) and classic dance was gay, Transgender, freak music. Active rock was drunk high school drop out Men under 24 years old. fill in other formats that the old white male PD's thought were strange and passed up on to be the 5th place also ran classic rot station. All gone online.
The former PD of 101.9 in the early to mid 90s swore to me that Top40 and all forms of it were dead, coffin, buried. He was about 30 years too early on that prediction! Sad the whole radio medium will go that way when the upper demos die off.
Who in their right mind will expose themselves to 20 minutes of commercials per hour?
How about that iBOC AM? (What is AM again?). Or FM HD!
