They wanted more airtime and a better overall signal as they were about ready to rebrand the network to Sporting News Radio. Newsweb leased 820 WYPA to them. 820 stunted with music, similar to the filler music they run on 750 and 1240 in the days leading up to it.
I remember the first day of Sports on 820 the host was going on about how they were “Pre-empted by the Germans” on Sundays.
A much smaller EMF leased 94.3 to run a small (at the time) network called K-LOVE. Their future CEO Mike Novak was the afternoon guy on K-LOVE at the time and he was on that first day. They were really excited to be on in Chicago. I think it was their largest market at the time. They had reached the bigtime.
Salem was prepping to launch 106.7 The Fish when K-LOVE came on 94.3. They took 106.7 off the air for a week
