The FCC does not simply allow people to apply for new AM or FM facilities even if it would not cause interference. They have to open filing windows to allow for applications. Newsweb had offers for the facility which they declined. They made millions selling the AM transmitter site property, and they wanted to keep someone else from getting the frequency so they turned in the 850 license and it was deleted. That is the second time Newsweb has done that with one of their facilities in recent years, the other one was 1470. They may be a smart broadcaster in terms of financial matters, but it is my opinion they are not a good broadcaster by doing things such as eliminating two frequencies from local markets.
