I'm of the opinion that possibly, consultants wrecked what I LOVE:radio! The (radio trade) ads show idiots in their 70's loving radio. (I'm North of 65.) How in the hell do you pull in (younger) people with this crap? Does anyone know how OLD a 70 y/o looks to a 20 something?
People want youth, sporty, hip, happening, young, and it's this thinking: "well, it works in Columbus" formula, and very tired OLD stuff. Nothing is new! Tired jocks from the 70's who are in their 70's. "It ain't 1971 no more!"
I will disagree on this being the new norm. People are people. They are living, breathing beings, put here to live! All will be back to normal again. We'll just be survivors. Beat down by life a little, but dusting ourselves off. "We made it!"
It's like the people INSIDE radio have given up. "I have 30 years. What the hell do I care."
I wish radio communicated, and not with an 8-10 minute stop-set. As the GREAT Bartell P D, George Wilson said, "it's what between the songs."
While never in radio, I LOVED and I mean, LOVED my lot in life. I was surrounded by people who were just "there." "It's just a job." Really, really sad. Maybe that's what you have here.
And, the 25-54 demographic? A person at 25 is VASTLY different at 54.
Maybe I'm right. Maybe I'm wrong.
Anyways, Great Post, Z!
