Only the Religious and Latin casters take the HD spectrum seriously. EMF was purchasing translators like crazy when everyone else was sleeping at the wheel. As everyone was making fun of EMF, they rose to be the #2 broadcaster in the US, commercial free, piped in overall with no local content.
Anyone want to chime in and if you have an AM HD receiver, how many daytime and nighttime HD signals you still receiving? AM Stereo if your HD receiver has the ability to decode it? For me here in Chicago it is 0 & 0 & 0. So much for better technology, more choices and better programming! (In Jest, of course)
Nice FM counterpart WGN! MeTV-fm nice translator as the FCC is breathing down your neck. Pretty embarrassing if you end up not having your network flagship in its home town.
A year after Covid, you have 18.1 share of spoken formats in the Top 10 and the #1 & #3 stations are spoken format, while the local NPR outlet has a 6.7 share and is #1 25 - 54 mornings and afternoons. The bigger story here is how much this non-comm is sapping potential revenue from the commercial stations? WBEZ has room to drop, as the headlines are less than they were a month ago, but they are no longer a station that ranked under #20 consistently and have a lot of new ears that can stick around.
The major broadcasters are still running jock less for 10 hours. Running AM drive shows for 7 hours. You have a handful of stations either mimicking each other or in each others backyard. You endure a bloody fight to try to consume the same big bone or the smart one will go consume the smaller bone all to themselves. Except in broadcast radio as they cry hunger and poverty drooling over the big bone that just got a lot smaller.
You have B96 acting like they are not sub 2 share and not winning any demos except for someone will pop up and say they are winning some irrelevant demo like "12 - 17 male chocolate labs in one zip code breakdown". Shows how inept the Entercom management is not to even allow the PD to skew the format, separating themselves from KISS or the upper demos to WTMX. Or get your head out of your ass that the research is not guiding your stations and company the right way. WGCI is no better fighting with WPWX for a 1.9 and 1.2 share. It is a sad state of affairs when the 46 year Urban veteran (now HipHop) and 39 year CHR veteran are in the lower half of the station ratings especially when their revenue and ratings depend on high numbers and high cume.
In closing, hello Entercom, iHeart, Cumulus and Hubbard. It is not the pandemic anymore. The pandemic shifted life. This IS the new norm. You are standing still and will fall so far back, you will not matter anymore. Give some compelling programming because as you offer programming not available anywhere else on the band people will listen to commercials, if they feel "part" of the station. Next, stop gutting live local airstaff. Finally, stop risking your existence to research which is failing you. The old days of making a (free) gut decision paid off nicely. Your research costs money and you are not being paid anymore.
