Opinion: The video is 11:31 of sheer inaccuracies and opinion, more that the old format is leaving. But as an American, his right to post a YouTube video of his opinion. Bottom line, a radio dork.
Please let me break down reality, not opinion, facts.
@1:32 "Straight up music with very few advertisements"
Costs more to run the electricity at the tower than they are pulling in revenue.
KSUR went iBOC HD, as you announced "digital". --- Listening to the video he is SLAMMING the technology as being antique for the AM band! We already had that in Chicago. You realize that Raslin? WSCR, WLS, WBBM-AM and WGRB all *turned it off*. There are no more HD "digital" AM stations in Chicago. Don't expect any to come back either. (Sorry Raslin).
Also.... KSUR-AM, the one and primary reason it exists, is to drive the FM Translator on FM, where most people will listen. (FCC rules state translators have to originate from an AM or FM HDx signal). If you do not understand what a translator is, it is a very low power FM station with no protection from other higher powered stations. There are a few here in Chicago.
WCKG AM 1530 - W272DQ-FM 102.3 FM
WMBI AM 1200 - W268AY-FM 101.5FM
Below is KSUR-AM's FM translator and a map of the coverage range. Doesn't even hit most of LA. It is majorly directional and is a limited suburban signal toward San Fernando and Santa Clara.
Raslin, always nice to hear from you. I hope this cleared it up a bit, as I have been well versed in the mechanics of radio transmission for a long time.
