Last night at midnight, I'm listening to WXRT-FM Chicago while working on the computer. It was midnight and a song was playing. I live in Chicago so I was listening to their over-the-air signal.
Without any warning, the alert tones cut off the record for its brief duration. When the test was over, the station went back to the music which was still in progress.
1. Was this a case of bad timing on the part of WXRT? Do these stations know ahead of time at preciously when the alert test tones will be activated?
2. I have always believed a station has to announce a legal ID when the test has finished. There was no such announcement on WXRT. The song heard segued into another without any acknowledgement.
3. Slightly off-topic, I hope the moderators on this forum will allow it.
Many radio stations need to leave the air for periodic maintenance. It's usually performed in the early morning hours. Does the FCC have to be notified?
As always, thank you to WYTZZ95FM, Jeremy Andrews and the other pros who frequent this board.
