Air1 revamped their format from Christian CHR to mostly Contemporary Worship music in January. They still play some Pop, Dance-EDM, Rap and Rock. Artists K-LOVE would never play such as Tedashii, Switchfoot, Tauren Wells, Kanye West for whatever reason, Manafest and Steven Malcolm. Christian CHR is much like Mainstream CHR lately, but the songs are more meaningful. Some are vague. But some are actually quite good. Listen to “Close” by Tauren Wells if you like Dance. Air1 plays it all the time.
As for the focus on “Worship Music”, it’s basically what charts. Go check Apple Music’s Christian chart. It’s all Contemporary Worship cuts. It’s simply called “Playing what sells”
This leads back to Country. Both CCM and Country come from Nashville and what I call “Key words” are used in many if not most of the songs. In Country it’s “Girl, Drink, Truck, River”
In Christian it’s “Fire, Valley, Battle, River”
As for Hip-Hop, it’s mostly dominated by Younger 20 somethings high on some kind of prescription medication or drugs yapping into a beat on their laptop. They post these songs on Soundcloud, have a big persona on Social Media and have a lot of fans as a result. A lot of the lyrics for some are influenced by 2000s Emo Rock of all things. Urban radio can play it, but given the nature of where it originates from (Streaming music, internet) listeners are not going to discover or tune to WGCI or WPWX to hear the next song drop. They’ll be listening on Spotify.
