I’d often listen to it sign off in the 90s before the Newsweb days when Entravision owned it. The last few minutes before sign off usually had a traffic report and some PSAs. They’d always leave the air with a basic Legal ID and some other strange stuff. They’d run old recordings of Personal Achievement Radio during unsold blocks.
Anyway until last year or so, every day they’d sign on with “I’m Not In Love” by 10CC before going into random blocks of music until around 7AM (An hour they wouldn’t lose in the fall). I could tell they had live board ops. Some days they’d run late and you could hear them abruptly turn the pot up. I recorded it a several times myself just for keepsake. Glad I did.
That said, playing music was never Newsweb’s business model outside of fillers and for 4 years, Nine FM.
On average, an AM graveyard signal like WSBC gets out 10 miles or less from the tower. Shutting it off if nobody is buying time is probably good for saving money on things like electricity.
If you ever wonder who has been leasing time on these stations, it’s all in the public files. WNDZ has the best signal of the bunch and likely makes them the most money. Lot of Serbian and Spanish programs over the years.
