In WABC’s case, it’s a guy worth 3 Billion, who happens to be a New Yorker that grew up with WABC, is fond of radio and hosts a brokered talk show buying a station of it’s own. 12.9 Million is pocket change for him.
In the case of the Emmis New York stations, it’s Standard General’s upstart media company. Emmis’ CEO will join the new company in the same role. They said they intend to buy more. If they’re willing, I could see some more Cumulus stations becoming Standard General stations.
They originally were planning on doing TV when Tribune was going to sell to Sinclair. They were going to take the excess stations. Fell through. Now they’re trying radio. Plenty of opportunity there...
