I'm not in the market for a new car right now, I have SXM in one of my cars, but, I let it lapse last year, I mostly listened to the decades channels and IMHO opinion, if I'm paying extra they should be putting more effort into programming.
What you say about the big guys and HD is so on the money.
If they had an all 80's channel, done in the Big City/Jeffro style on the air right now, I'd get an HD radio in my car today.
I would also love a real oldies station that I used to listen to on 1690, A great jazz and blues station that I loved on the old WBEE 1570.
There are so many things they could do, all 60's, all 70's, how about a comedy/music station, I'm thinking about something like the old AM 1000.
There are so many things they could do, those are just a few, off the top of my head I can think of.
No this would not be a fruitless effort, because like you said, most of my friends or family have bought new cars in the last couple of years and almost all of them have HD radio included.
Unfortunately, none of them really bother with it after checking it out once or twice, because their is nothing compelling there right now.
I noticed that the Cubs on 104.3 HD is a draw for them. I have a relative who bought an electric car and it has no AM radio, he always listens to the games on the HD radio, but nothing else.
He knows I'm a big radio geek and asked me why is there nothing else on HD in this city thats worth listening to? Unfortunately I had to answer because the same people that run the HD channels are the same ones running the regular stations, they just don't care. I should add that Cubs games are the ONLY thing he listens to on radio in the car, HD or regular.
I asked him, with all the apps and other things you have in the car, would you listen to regular radio even if there was something good there?
His answered surprised me, If they had a station like The Blaze or The Loop how it was back 25 years ago I would.
The answered surprised me, to be honest, this guy is "smart" everything, probably hasn't listened to regular radio, except for Cubs games in years, yet he would listen to something on HD if it was good.
Key word "good". Sure people left radio due to smartphones and streaming, but, that was not the only reason, they also left because there is very little personality left and the good ones that are on air rarely get to use the talent they have. 8 to 10 minutes of spots in a row and the same songs beat to death over and over.
Radio corps can blame new tech all they want, but, reality is they've been driving people away since before I owned a flip phone, they saw the new tech coming and just kept doing the same thing.
I think I had a point there somewhere, LOL
Gotta go, hope things are going good with U, Z!
