Lots of memories come swirling. I can remember "scanning the dials" as a kid in the early 1980's. More on a regular basis around 1985 or so. The 1980's and early to middle 1990's in general was very good Chicago area radio, AM and FM! ("No comment" on the state of affairs on Chicago area radio now, AM and FM.) Many of these "prime radio years" were for me during Jr. High, High School, and College. Even post-college, radio was pretty good for several years to come. We all know why 1996 was a dreadful year for radio and media. In the years that would follow, gradually, the death of terrestrial radio would commence and the eventual emergence of translator mania, etc.
It was fun listening to the "Radio Wars" between 96.3 and 94.7 back in the day. I have fond memories of B96's Lunch Party and Traffic Jam! The retro hits blended in were awesome! I believe these programs were on between the middle 1990's into just a little after 2000 if memory is accurate? Didn't listen as much to B96 starting around the middle 2000's or so.
92.5 WDEK was a good local listen, back in the day. HOT 102.3 was a good local listen, back in the day. 99.9 WBUS was a good local listen, back in the day. 94.9 WDKB ("B 95") was also a good local listen, until not too long ago. What's a good radio listen now? Sadly, not too much on good old AM - FM these days around here. Interestingly, when traveling, radio is at least better in other markets, not so much big mega-markets, or small tiny markets, but, some mid-sized markets have decent radio compared to Chicago area radio.
Thanks for the post and the opportunity to do a little reminiscing of back in the day, when radio was.
