Does anyone know exactly did B96 started do the 12:00pm lunch & 5:00pm traffic mixes in the 90s? I know that the 10:00pm remixes started in Feb 1993. Not sure when they got rid of the 10:00pm Remix? Maybe it 2006 when they tried to copy WGCI's Whispers in the Dark with the "Slow Jam Mix Tape" (which has since been ended as well)? The Weekday mixes had to have begun after 1990. The 10/12/1990 issue of Radio & Records features an interview with then-B96 program director Dave Shakes on how he turned the station into a winner. Also included was a small sample of songs that B96 was playing during the 5:00pm hour and the one song that gives it away was The Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody". There was certainly no dance/club remix of that song, which came out in 1965 but popular again because of the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore film "Ghost".
Anyone familiar with Hot Mix Productions syndicated mixes? B96 aired those mixes as early as 1992 or 93 though around 2003, when JamTraxx Media took over the mixes. In 2006, DJ Flipside took over the 5:00pm mixes which lasted through last year when B96 canceled "Flipside @ 5" and no longer do mixes during those hours. When did they get rid of the 12:00pm mix? They used to do 80s/90s/00s throwback mixes ("Noon Kaboom") in 2010 but stopped doing them.
In 1991, Hot Mix Productions was syndicated by ABC Radio Networks and aired on several markets nationwide. I assumed that Z95 aired these mixes originally as the station was affiliated by ABC Radio Networks. After all, ABC Radio Networks at the time also syndicated "American Top 40" with Shadoe Stevens which aired on Z95 until the station's demise in Oct 1991. B96 at the time was airing competing countdown show "Casey's Top 40" with the late, great Casey Kasem (AT40's original host) which was run by Westwood One. Although the crossover/rhythmic music featured on Hot Mix was a far better fit on B96 than Z95 at the time, it wouldn't had made sense for ABC Radio to air a syndicated program on a rival station of one of their affiliates, especially how heated the Z95/B96 CHR war was at that time. I assumed that B96 picked up the mixes sometime after Z95 flipped to talk (simulcasting WLS 890).
To top it all off, B96 mixer/personality Brian Middleton did some of the remixes on Hot Mix Production's remix label, long-defunct Powerhouse Records during this time. He did the remix of the song "Crazy" by Daisy Dee, which got heavy airplay on B96 at the time. On "Hot Mix Radio 33" (originally from 6/15/91), I noticed the old Chicago hip house track "Check Out the Hook" by the 2 Young Brothers. That song was often in the B96 mixes and even made it to the station's regular rotation in June 1991. Meantime, Z95 did not feature the song at all. I look through all of Z95's reported playlists of 1990/1991 on Billboard (via AmericanRadioHistory.com). By the time B96 had that song had that song on its rotation, Z95 had switched back to mainstream Top 40. Maybe B96 was airing those Hot Mixes after all instead of Z95?
Also, one of Brian's remixes appear in the #46 1991 issue (original aired in 11/16/91), weeks after Z95 bit the dust.
Nonetheless, those Hot Mixes had to aired on B96 by 1992 since "Show 11" (originally from 3/12/92) has FHR Project's "Out of Control" in one of the mixes. What other Rhythmic Top 40 station besides B96 and Hot 102 in Milwaukee was playing that song on heavy rotation?
On a side note, Dave Rajput (who did the Hot Mix sets) later appeared as one of the judges in B96's Mixer Search contest in 1993.
BTW, it turned out that Z95 (WTYZ) did do mixes during their ill-fated dance/CHR "Hell FM" dying days.
Any answers? Thanks.
