iHeart owns 2 in Milwaukee. They have barely any listeners. One has been in the format going on 6 years, another just launched. They must bill well because they keep going.
Good Karma bought WKTI, flipped it to ESPN Radio. They do not get great ratings either. For awhile, they didn't even subscribe to Nielsen for ratings. They make money without ratings.
In Denver, like Milwaukee there are 5-7 Sports stations. One gets decent ratings. The rest are way down in the zeros. The rest are not changing format because they are in the zeros. FM or AM.
Some have a whopping 0.1. They're not changing format.
They make money other ways.
Onto other markets, KABC, KEIB, Los Angeles. Talk stations, Zeros. No format change, they make enough money. Market clearance.
San Francisco. Two Alternative stations battling it out in the low 1s. People wonder why they have not changed format. Been at it for years. Do they make money? Are they doing better in specific demos? Are they package selling with other stations in the cluster, or even the company?
There's a lot more than the 6+ ratings to radio stations and why or why they have not changed format.
