Chicago's connection to Me-TV (Been part of Chicago's TV landscape since 2003)
The music variety
The voice talent (Bill Cochrane) and PD Rick O'Dell have also been a part of the Chicago landscape from their many years at WNUA in specific.
As for the way Rock and Alternative is. Like every other radio format, there is not much good new music out there. Alternative stations like WKQX rely on the golds from the 80s-2000s to fill the time.
If they played all new music, the ratings would likely suffer. When it's original incarnation Q87.7 came on, there was a lot of good new Alternative songs being released. That was in 2012. They played a lot of new songs and they sounded good. It was nothing like Q101 had been. Everything they were avoiding if anything.
The good songs seemed to slowly start to fizzle over time. These days Alternative still has a large amount the best new songs being released to radio from the labels. Not very many, but more than CHR.
Active Rock is also lacking. WIIL plays quite a bit of new music, but they still have to fill time with 90s and 2000s songs. WJJO in Madison is also in that position. WJJO was always the most intense new music friendly Active Rocker I knew. Even they are playing a lot of the 90s and 2000s stuff.
