I used to donate blood regularly until I started my meds for MS. I take Aubagio, and some of the side effects are a drop in the red blood cell count and a drop in the white blood cell count. If somebody needs a blood transfusion, those would be very unwanted side effects. My counts have remained normal so far. BTW, my blood type is B negative.
