John Hollis and I were recently discussing our repertoire and how some songs that we enjoy, including our original compositions, sometimes don't seem to grab our audience's attention. What we perceive is the same thing that Ricky Nelson encountered in his 1971 Madison Square Garden concert: people only want to hear the old songs - nothing new. With the demographic of our audience that rings true for us. Ricky wrote "Garden Party" to express his dismay at this reality. John and I are wondering - do we really have to play "Tom Dooley" at every show? Would you like to hear an obscure Ian Tyson song, or maybe my most recent composition? I guess not - break out the Scotch & Soda!
