It was fun to see so many people that knew Bob, people we met out on the road and got to know as friends. Also good to reconnect with George Grove after 16 years! Another high-light was the Deering Banjo room. Greg and Janet were both there and we bought a bunch of stuff. Janet is now making finger picks and of course we had to give 'em a try.
Then October rolled around, which brings a special day: October 9th. The birthdate of John Lennon, Olivia Newton-John, George Grove, Rick Daugherty and - ta-da! ME! Now, it's not every year that you turn 75, so I guess that qualifies you for special treatment. And that's what I got for this birthday.
For years I had occasionally caught glimpses of a car that lived in Meri's mom's neighborhood. It was a 2002 T-bird, robin's-egg blue. I was really captivated by this car, as I had always liked the '50's-vintage T-birds, and this one had a similar sleek design, sans the tail-fins.
Our little town holds a community-wide garage sale on Labor Day weekend and Meri and I had taken the golf cart around to see what people were hawking this year. We happened to drive by the house where the T-bird lived and - Whoa! It's sitting out in the drive-way - with a FOR SALE sign on it! So I made a U-ie on the cart and we pulled up into the drive-way so I could get a close-up look. And what I saw was amazing - absolutely show-room perfect, inside and out.
So the owner came out and gave us the details - 15,000 miles, never been out in the rain, even had the original tires on it. Removable hard-top (with iconic port-hole windows), soft-top, original bra and two full-body covers. Meri made the owner an offer and off it went to our garage. The owner was glad to know that it would still be in the neighborhood and that it was going to someone who would give it TLC. And that I will. It gets a total detail after every outing.
One thing for sure - this is more money than we've ever spent at a garage sale!
