Re: awfully quiet around here....

OK - I've been quiet too long. And it's hard to ignore all that's going on in the world. In an attempt to keep a sense of humor about this virus business, I've come up with a few bright ideas to put a smile on your face. The mask thing is particularly annoying to me - peoples' smiles are lost forever. (Frowns too, but that's OK, I guess.) So I decided to put a fresh spin on the subject. A friend made some nice masks for us - mine's made from a camo fabric. But on top of that I wear a rubber pig nose. When I go into a store with that I get a variety of reactions. Mostly people ignore me, I guess not knowing how to react, or maybe just feeling embarrassed for me. Then there are occasional thumbs-ups as folk pass by at a safe 6-ft. distance. My favorite was a lady in Costco who came up and said, "I like that - I raise pigs." And I responded, "Oh, hi Mom!" I also have a poster I made relative to social distancing - it's pretty funny if you enjoy poking fun at banjo players. Add to that the parody I wrote for a local radio station, "Me & My Banjo" (based on "Me & My Shadow".) I can't find any way to post any of this stuff here, but if you're curious, send me an email and I'll forward the files to you. Oh, yeah - I also invented "Social Dis-dancing" for couples who are separated at this time. You hook up with your sweetie via FaceTime or some such technology, one of you cranks up the hi-fi with your favorite dance music and, holding your phone in front of you in a mime-style dance posture, you proceed to "Social Dis-dance." As an alternative you could get one of those blow-up love-dolls and tape your phone to it's face. As for this other stuff that has now eclipsed the virus, I'm just sad. I have a lot of mixed emotions about what's going on, not only here in the USA, but surprisingly, throughout the world. But again, I'm trying to keep a sense of humor despite the mayhem, so I had just started writing the National Anthem for the new country of CHAZ (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone - formerly a part of Seattle) when they suddenly changed the name of their small nation. It's now CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest). So I had to scrap that project and I'm not sure if the country of CHOP needs a National Anthem. It probably won't last much past this "summer of love", as Seattle Mayor Jenny Derkan is calling it. Somehow this feels different from the original summer of love. I was there - it think. Bob Shane used to say, "If you remember the '60's then your weren't there."
