While the rest of the CD is historically interesting, I wasn’t particularly knocked out by most of it. “Scotch & Soda” suffers from an inappropriate (IMHO) fiddle solo, I assume this was a Glaser Bros. attempt to countrify the song. And I’ve never been a fan of the song, “Honey”, but I must say that Bob’s version rips Bobby Goldsboro’s recording to shreds. Shame on Decca for dropping the ball.
I guess in Decca’s defense I might say that Bob Shane was a unique commodity and difficult to pigeon-hole. I don’t think country music was the right road for him to go down, and maybe this experiment left everybody scratching their heads. But had they promoted “Honey” I think Bob could have created his own niche in the market.
