Re: David Peel"
Honestly, no one can replace Bob Shane. He’s one-of-a-kind. Between Zorn and Peel I suppose David might have been a closer fit. I especially never liked the way Bill did “Scotch & Soda”, but then even Sinatra wouldn’t touch that one. Beyond the Zorn/Peel choice I would offer my partner, John Hollis as the closest Shane replacement I’ve ever encountered. He has studied Shane’s guitar-playing style and really nails deBobwan’s rhythmic feel. Vocally, again, nobody can sing like Shane, but John comes pretty close and he really did a great job in our “Spotlight on...” show. We continue to include KT songs in our duo repertoire - I guess I can’t escape that, after so many years associated with those songs. But more and more we’re adding our original tunes and John has written some really good ones that are fun to sing. We’re also experimenting with some Everly Bros. and other obscure tunes that strike our fancy. We just added Hoyt Axton’s “Della & The Dealer”, for example. And I’m introducing the banjo in tunes not normally associated with that instrument. Like Cat Steven’s “Here Comes My Baby”, but we’re doing it more like the Tremoloes - up tempo R&R banjo - very cool. Stephan Stills’ “Love the One Yer With”, Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” (reggae banjo - oh yeah!). We like surprising people.
