Which of Dave's banjo parts are you trying to re-create? Over the years, some of us have accumulated a lot of Dave tabs. In fact, Pete Curry published a book of them a few years ago. They might save you some time.
One thing to remember: Before the At Large album, Dave' style was very free form. In some ways, he was just a guy with a good ear who had no idea how to play banjo.
From At Large onward, it's a lot of standard frailing and three-finger picking. He never dropped his thumb, so you don't have to worry about all that clawhammer stuff.
The most amazing thing is just how quickly Dave's playing progressed and far forward he got between 1958 and 1961. Truly amazing.
