To some, "Goodnight, Irene," not "Tom Dooley," was the start of the folk revival. They say you couldn't go anywhere in the summer of 1950 without hearing that song blasting from a radio or a jukebox. Oddly, the lyrics are very dark, but the song is so well known by now that most people don't really notice.
