You're probably right about the 60's lounge singer label. He wasn't as much as a folk singer as a singer of folk songs. He was discovered by Frank Sinatra singing at a lounge in LA ( PJ's) and signed to his Reprise Record label. The song Hammer was recorded live at that lounge, so you were spot on in your characterization.
