Someone once said that if the Kingston Trio were the frat boys of folk music, their professors were the Limeliters. That sort of sums it up for me.
I think you have to include Dick Foley in any discussion of fabulous voices in folk. Plus, the B4 brand of comedy was quite unique if the live albums were any indicator. Contemporary accounts indicate they were very funny, and even a little edgy in a 60's, folkie kind of way. I always figured they altered their formula to a more subdued stage presence after the 60's to be more in tune with their Japanese audiences, and they were very successful at it.
Lou was a perfect example of someone who maybe didn't have a great voice, but WAS a great singer. He learned to use 100% of what he had, and to great effect.
