The first time I saw the Kingston Trio was when it was the New Kingston Trio. I was with The Brothers Four at the time and we were on the same show with them somewhere. So, kinda different than being in the audience to see them.
During the Shane/Gambill/Grove era I saw them (as an audience member and backstage guest) many times. But by then the group bore little resemblence to the original B-N-D or even the B-N-J configuration.
I did see the Limeliters twice when I was a kid and got their autographs both times. Once was in Spokane before we moved to Medford, and then they came to our Jr. High School in Medford for a concert in about 1960. I have always been a huge Limeliters fan and when I finally got to meet them as a member of The Brothers Four, I was like, "Do you remember that 12-year old kid that got your autograph in Medford, Oregon back in 1960?" Yeah, right!
To be honest, I've never really been much of a concert-goer. I guess having been initiated into back-stage life at such an early age, I've always been more at home watching a show from the back. Well, actually, I don't think it's that so much as just being too cheap to cough up the ticket price. Much more economical to see the show from the rear + you get to hang with the artists and enjoy the green room.
Some of the acts I've seen from backstage include Donna Summer, Cat Stevens (that's what he called himself at the time) along with his opening act, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, The Association, The Smothers Brothers, Roger McGuinn, The Shaw Brothers, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, John Stewart, Elton John, The Beachboys, The Mamas & The Papas, Brenda Lee, Little Jimmy Dickens, Doug Kershaw, Roger Miller, The Everly Brothers...oh...I should make a list of all these. Just rambling those off the top of my head kinda surprised me. But I know I could think of more. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Judy Collins...OK, I'll have to get back to this later. I think I have a story about each one of those shows.
