For the most part I keep in guitar tuning, with the 7th (drone) string muted. Un-muted, the 7th string is tuned to E, like the 1st string, as it runs all the way to the headstock with the other strings. Rick Shubb made me a custom 5th-string capo (7th-string, in this case) that spans the nut to the 15th fret, so I can retune the drone string to any pitch within an octave+.
As I explained about my Aria 5-string, Rick Shubb designed these little mute clips that allow me slip a string under them and mute that string out. On my 7-string I have a mute clip for the 7th, 6th and 5th strings, so I can retune and convert to a 5-string configuration or and 4-string.
