Re: Opening A Show For Others
McGuinn told me the name change was part of a religious awakening he had in the mid-sixties. He wasn't a happy camper that night so he didn't go into much detail. The Byrds that night in Dec. 1969 were: McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin ( of ' Cherry Pie' fame), and Gene Parsons ( though the FSU school paper said Gram, but he was long gone by then). This was the post ' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo' days so the band ( even with Clarence White who I always considered a Bluegrass picker) were no match for the intense hard rock edge of the Mark Farner led Grand Funk. Their ( The Byrds ) set list was pretty much the expected impressive hit list. But this was a college show and FM radio was starting to proliferate, so the Byrds weren't gonna recapture that crowd. I came to see the Byrds so I wasn't disappointed.
