I can speak on that album in a way that lots of us who are second generation members can speak. When I rejoined the group The Silver Anniversary record-because of its high quality-was sold at all the shows. I was asked to sign the CD (or cassette) even though (I knew) I wasn't part of it. Those are unusual places that can be hard sometimes and funny sometimes. I talked with Mike Kirkland recently and thanked him for all he did to make my career possible. I gave him a CD that was made for our Hong Kong show in 2001. (A few weeks after 9/11. The plane going over was almost empty.) It was the best of the Columbia Recordings and cover photos from the early 60's. I told Mike I signed his face (with my name) maybe 2000 times that night. We both laughed.
But it is sometimes hard on the ego to be in that spot. When Terry joined the group in 1991 Bob Flick produced a live album from Japanese concerts and we had "The Tokyo Tapes" which represented that configuration for a dozen years. The group went to Japan not long after Mike McCoy joined the group in 2004 and Bob made a compilation called "This Land Is Your Land" that represented that group and we sold and signed during that time.
When Karl joined the group in 2008 the same thing. That album is called "The Golden Anniversary." In each case the guys the audiences saw and who signed the CD's sang on the CD's.
Another thing: each group had a little different "take" on the music. Bob (Haworth) is a gifted harmonica player-so that sound add a lot to that recording. Dick liked to play the piano. When Terry joined the group we added a mandolin (no harmonica.) When McCoy joined the group it went back to guitars, banjos, and bass. That is where it is now.
Again, thanks for your interest. There are a few other posts that I may add a thought or two to as well.
