Then I locked into a musical feel that I liked and that seemed to drive the lyric. As I usually do, I tweaked the chord progression and the lyrics a little as I was in the refining stage, but the song actually came out pretty well. And Forrest Fenn likes it, which is most important in this case.
I played the song in Santa Fe on Oct. 1st for his book-signing event, which was held at the Inn and Spa at Loretto. About 200 people were in attendance and after Forrest introduced me to the crowd I sang "Too Far To Walk". Everyone seemed to enjoy the song and I received many compliments afterward. So the next step is to get into the studio and record it. In the meantime, here are the lyrics:
TOO FAR TO WALK
Music by Bob Haworth
Lyrics by Bob Haworth & Forrest Fenn

AT THE INN AT LORETTO I’M SITTIN’ AT THE BAR
LISTENIN’ TO SOME GUY PLAYIN’ GUITAR
WATCHIN’ THE ICE MELT IN MY MARGUERITA
TRYIN’ TO CATCH THE EYE OF THAT CUTE SENORITA
SO I ORDER ANOTHER AND MY MIND STARTS TO WANDER
LOST IN MY THOUGHTS – SO MUCH TO PONDER
HOW DID I END UP SO FAR AWAY
AT THE INN AT LORETTO IN OLD SANTA FE?
CHORUS:
WELL, DON’T YOU KNOW – LIFE IS A DREAM?
NO – NO – NO – IT’S NOT WHAT IT SEEMS
WELL, HELLO – WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE CLOCK
I KNOW I’VE GOT SOMEPLACE TO BE
BUT IT’S TOO FAR TO WALK
WHEN I WAS YOUNG I DREAMED OF ADVENTURE
THEY SAY NOTHING’S GAINED IF NOTHING IS VENTURED
I AIMED FOR THE SKY AND I FLEW WITH THE EAGLES
& SOME THINGS I’VE DONE THEY WERE ACTUALLY LEGAL
CHORUS:
WELL, DON’T YOU KNOW – LIFE IS A DREAM?
NO – NO – NO – IT’S NOT WHAT IT SEEMS
WELL, HELLO – WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE CLOCK
I KNOW I’VE GOT SOMEPLACE TO BE
BUT IT’S TOO FAR TO WALK
BRIDGE:
THROUGH THE YEARS I’VE PLAYED & WON
I’VE MET SOME FOLKS AND HAD SOME FUN
BUT NOW MY VICTORIES ALL RING HOLLOW
CUZ THERE’S SO MANY ROADS I’VE YET TO FOLLOW
AND ALL OF THOSE PLACES WHERE I USED TO PLAY
I PROMISED MYSELF I’D GO BACK THERE SOMEDAY
THE FISH ARE STILL BITIN’ UP IN WYOMING
BUT I THINK I’VE DONE THE LAST OF MY ROAMING
CUZ NOW WHEN I LOOK AT MYSELF IN THE MIRROR
THE IMAGE IS BLURRY BUT THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR
OLD FATHER TIME IS AT THE DOOR KNOCKIN’
THERE’LL BE NO MORE ROLLIN'
I'M JUST SITTIN’ HERE ROCKIN’
CHORUS:
DON’T YOU KNOW – LIFE IS A DREAM?
NO – NO – NO – IT’S NOT WHAT IT SEEMS
WELL, HELLO – WON’T YOU SIT DOWN & TALK?
THERE’S SOMEPLACE THAT I’D RATHER BE
BUT IT’S TOO FAR TO WALK
AND NOW HERE I AM AT THE INN AT LORETTO
THAT GUY WITH THE GUITAR IS SINGIN’ FALSETTO
WHY DON’T YOU JOIN ME AND I’LL TELL YOU MY STORY
OF A LIFE OF ADVENTURE, RICHES AND GLORY
CHORUS:
DON’T YOU KNOW – LIFE IS A DREAM?
NO – NO – NO – IT’S NOT WHAT IT SEEMS
WELL, HELLO – WON’T YOU SIT DOWN AND TALK?
THERE’S SOMEPLACE THAT I’D RATHER BE
BUT IT’S TOO FAR TO WALK
Now, I must confess that when I first started this song I had the goofy notion to include something about having to go to the bathroom, but it's too far to walk. And I did add a tag line at the end for my own amusement, and this is the only place you'll ever see it:
I REALLY SHOULD GO TAKE A PEE
BUT IT'S TOO FAR TO WALK.
Depends....
