On the occasion I was honored to meet Allan Shaw, Rediscover's head honcho, he said it was something he preferred not to discuss. And while Fiott's picture appeared in The Kingston Trio on Record, John Stewart said something similar. Because of my damned reporter's instinct/curiosity I've wondered about it all these years.
There is no question that the late Stan Rogers performed "Mary Ellen Carter" with the vitality and love of a parent caring for his child. But while there is something to be said for some "live" recordings, a good clean studio version of a song is my usual preference. As far as I know, Stan Rogers never recorded a studio version, and that's a pity.
But like I said, "Mary Ellen Carter" is a spectacular piece, and one you and Bobby could probably nail! Maybe those "Chilly Winds" scoundrels could even do it justice. (Hint, hint!)
