When I think of "MEC" or "WITJ" I picture a folk club with a bunch of liberal granola-eating Birkenstock-clad folkies singing along to "whack-fall-de-daddio" and it's something that is not me. I think one of the reasons that Bob Shane and I clicked so well we because of our mutual agreement on the concept (quoting Mr. Bob): "We're not folk-singers, we're entertainers." And that's how I've always perceived myself.
What's the distinction, you may ask? Well, it's something that is hard to verbalize, but if you see it you know the difference. The fact that The Trio (and myself as a solo artist to some degree) use folk music as a vehicle is more a matter of the simplicity of the music and the common connectability with the audience. But in my solo show, I like to do some music from the 1930's and '40's which I grew up with and dearly love. It doesn't fit into a strict folk music format and to a folk audience it may be confusing.
Now, Josh - "MEC" is a great song for you. Hey, you even resemble Stan Rogers a bit, so it fits. I'm just not willing to commit to being that much of a folkie I guess. I kind of like being uncategorizable.
