Long ago I determined that every person doing just a LITTLE more than his/her own share of societal obligations would turn the world into a paradise. But until every person sees this and commits to it, it won't be happening.
Meanwhile, the USA has a free enterprise system that has become so powerful and revered that basic human rights have become secondary to it. You can do or say anything you want in this country, as long as it doesn't impede someone's right to make a buck. Once that happens, the "entrepreneurs" will find a way of shutting you up or taking you out of the picture. That right to make that buck has become GOD.
So is it any wonder we have HOAs, HMOs, corporations, federations and organized groups of all kinds using every means available to manipulate laws and lawmaking to each one's own advantage? I'm so cynical I don't think so.
The Founding Fathers established a democratic system requiring the care and attention of EVERY citizen EVERY day. Since not every citizen can or will do that, the ones who have taken over by default have the power.
No conspiracy is necessary. As long as your average citizen remains distracted by just trying to survive, or following his favorite sports team, or last night's episode of "American Idol," that citizen isn't actively participating in his government or his society. This leaves the door open to the predators.
But the situation is not hopeless. As long as there are those few who give a damn, step forward, and see there is a greater good in doing more than their share, the predators don't win.
But you seem to have figured that out already. Congratulations again!
