And by the way, the question above was answered over on Kingston Crossroads. Here's what someone found on the internet: >>>Mayors of Boston: Events and Candidates of the 1940's (may be incomplete!) So it was John B. Hynes that we have to thank for the exit fee and for defeating Walter "George" O'Brien and dooming Charlie to a subterranean eternity. John B. Hynes - not a name I'd want to be stuck with. I can see the potential for many variations on the first name followed by "B. Hynes." Arrr-arrr-arrr!!!
* 1941 Nov 4: Maurice J. Tobin, elected; James M. Curley, defeated; Joseph Lee, defeated; Malcolm E. Nichols, defeated.
* 1945 Nov 6: James M. Curley, elected; John E. Kerrigan, defeated; William Arthur Reilly, defeated; John J. Sawtelle, defeated; Joseph Lee, defeated; Michael Paul Feeney, defeated.
* 1949 Nov 8: John B. Hynes, elected; James M. Curley, defeated; Patrick J. McDonough, defeated; George F. Oakes, defeated; Walter A. O'Brien, Jr., defeated. <<<
Gary nails a big part of the discrepancy that Bob H. notes - the ELECTION was in 1949, November - Hynes defeats both Curley and O'Brien - but Hynes takes office and Curley exits in 1950.
Trio lore suggested it was an election in 1948 - the lore is off by a year.
No mention of Curley being elected from jail, but it makes a great story!
