Mike, thanks for posting this very comprehensive biography of a great musical icon. Meri and I were very fortunate to have been front row for his come-back show last January, 2006. We had a nice time chatting with him after the show and I even got him to sign my ukulele. (Don't look for that on e-bay anytime soon, though.)

Don and Bob Shane were friends, as both were doing nightclub gigs in Hawaii during the 1950's. It's the end of an era, for sure. Hawaiian music has changed a lot since Don captured the hearts of tourists and locals alike during the 1960's. But despite the resurgence of more traditional Hawaiian music in recent years, Don continued to be a consistent draw with his '60's-style lounge act.
