In 1967,I converted a Harmony tenor using the same method as Nick did for his original 8 string guitar.I found that the neck was a tad bit too narrow for real comfort as the string pairs were just too close to each other. As of now,the only guitar that Martin has ever produced that would have made a great 8 string guitar was the 7 series guitars. These had a slightly wider neck(1 5/8" at nut) and the same 23" scale length as an O-18T.When I did own my 7-28 I never really thought about conversion,as I really could not bring myself to alter such a fine instrument.I still kick myself for selling it,but that is another story.
