Cat behavioural change - any ideas what is going on?... msg

A friend of mine has a 1yo neutered male cat that has had a major change in attitude, and she is really concerned. Tig used to be very playful, aggressively beating up the dogs, hiding and pouncing on anything/ anybody that walked by.... Mostly she called him "demon cat!". At other times he would be loving to his humans, purring and kneeding when picked up, tripping them by wending between their legs, always wanting to be nearby. Typical young cat behaviour. |
About a month ago Tig suddenly became afraid of doors. He'd warily go through in the very middle, and only if there was no choice. When my friend picked him up to carry him through a door he freaked out and bit her quite badly.
This morning she says he is getting worse - he's now afraid of his food bowl after knocking it off the freezer (where it is to keep the dogs out), and is hiding most of the time. He acts like monsters are going to get him. She wonders if he and a snake went rounds, since every stick, shadow, edge of rug, etc. makes him jump - but he's indoors-only, so that is unlikely. He lets her hold him for a few seconds, then gets VERY unhappy about the situation.
Have you ever seen a significant attitude change like this? Any ideas about how she can make Tig feel comfortable and relaxed again in his home?
