I do not have any "protection dogs" per se. For myself, I don't personally find "protection" to be a full time job. Not letting folks steal from me, is just something a dog is expected to do, because I feed them. Protection is what you do when you are not working at your regular job. I can see no reason for any dog I feed, to allow someone to shoot at me. |
For the first 365 days of his life, I am the only adult to touch my dogs. I find as many small children as I can, to play with them for that first 365 days.
The habits that this creates ...
1. As far as the dog is concerned, small children can walk on water. (A gang of 5 year old children could steal everything I own. My dogs would help them carry stuff off.)
2. If an adult reaches for my dogs, it will be clearly explained to even the untrained eye, you do not want to do that.
3. It is clear to the dog, that they are not a pet. They do not just walk up to people to get their butt scratched.
It makes the dog aloof with strangers, from day one. From all of his life's experience, there is absolutely no reason for an adult to walk up to him, PERIOD.
I do "Twilight Raids" early on, and frequently. This makes the pup watch humans, because strange humans always show up around dusk, and cause trouble. This introduces that evil doers, show up at home. Not only does this remove trust of strange humans, it also builds confidence in the pup's ability to bark and send them running away in fear.
CONTROL is the most important thing that starts day one.
With all of this shaping the view of the pup, he thinks that he is bullet proof. This gives me thousands of opportunities to teach him, the most critical command of all. OFF!!!!
"OFF" is the command, that allows me to make him as nasty as I want, and still take him everywhere I go.
OFF = I am in charge of security now, and you are just a dog.
