I stumbled across a picture of this dog a while back, and know nothing about him beyond the basic description (Kangal x Neapolitan), but was struck by the sheer power and presence of his look. Anyone who knows more about this particular animal is more than welcome to chime in, but whether this was a deliberate crossing or an accident, I was just curious if anyone saw any merit to this type of pairing? My personal take is as follows:
The Pros: From a strictly aesthetic point of view, he is an awesome-looking specimen, reminding me in some ways of some of the heavier-looking Bully Kutta strains out there. While that may be good enough for the backyard breeders looking to cash in on the big scary-looking dog craze, obviously that's no reason for the mastiff/PP dog community to give this cross a second look. From a functionality standpoint, though, the Kangal seems to have done wonders for the grotesque excess of skin and otherwise overdone appearance of the modern Neo. This dog looks like it still possesses the Neo's awesome power, but now with the agility and length of leg to actually use it effectively in a protection scenario. For the most part, the Kangal is a more rustic breed that has endured in its working state into the present era, so naturally it's suffered less coddling and has been forced by natural selection to favor healthy and physically resilient dogs. That could do wonders for the hip, elbow and eye problems the Neo of today is plagued by. Also, while on the subject of eyes, I've heard (admittedly second-hand)that the Kangal, like many LGD breeds, has tremendous eyesight by canine standards, and I know from personal experience with my Boerboels and my friend's Neos that they both have trouble distinguishing friend from foe on sight alone. So it's possible that that the Kangal blood could improve that quality as well. In terms of what the Neo adds to the Kangal, I would say a much more defense-driven, handler-oriented mindset, and the aforementioned wealth of brawn and physical power.
The Cons: There are too many possible ones that come to mind, but off the top of my head I'd imagine that while you could get a monster PP dog superior to either of its component breeds, you could just as easily get a physically crippled, mental basket-case embodying the worst of both. I don't know how the "sticktoitiveness" and defense drive of the Neo would jive with the independence and flock-guardian instincts of the Kangal, and if one would cancel the other out completely or if the conflicting drives might make the dog react erratically, i.e. aggressively at the worst possible times.
Whew! That rambled a bit, but I hope I made some sense. What are your thoughts? Just for the sake of avoiding any conflict, DISCLAIMER: this is NOT my dog, nor do I have any intention whatsoever of breeding/fighting/selling/etc. such a cross at any point. Just a purely philosophical conversation. Thanks!
