Lindsay, just do what works for you and your dogs. You always have the final say so for what happens to your dogs. If you are comfortable and trust your trainer, then I say go with your gut. I won't ever advise someone not to try a certain method, I just prefer they be aware of all the facts before they start. As edog said, you cannot do a forced retrieve or forced tracking 'half way', it has to be seen through to the end once you start. Just understand, it is NOT 100% reliable, these are living breathing creatures, not appliances or machines, they have good and bad days like we do.
Most of all? Have fun with your dogs, otherwise why bother doing any of it at all?
