The first Liberty ship, the SS Patrick Henry, was launched on September 27, 1941. This event, along with the launch of 13 other Liberty ships on the same day, was designated Liberty Fleet Day. I assume after these ships were fitted out and accepted into service AG crews were assigned and convoys were created. FYI- the SS Patrick Henry made its maiden voyage in January 1942 The first Armed Guard crew was placed on the S. S. Dunboyne on 2 December 1941. Those good in math can see that this is 5 days before Pearl Harbor. As you can see the AG was in action fighting WW2 before we were attacked by the Japanese and FDR made his declaration of war. PLEASE look for (and join) the Facebook group: US Navy Armed Guard WWII-Group for lots of information postings and pictures related to the Armed Guard and Merchant Marine. Regards, Craig
