AS John Haynes remarked, Alaska has many strange place names. I wonder why they didn't keep their original Russian names? Another 'acquired' state, California, kept its Mexican names!

Bob, Alaska DID keep many Russian names: Alaska is the Russian version of the Aleutian word Alakshak, which means great lands. Then there are: Baranof, Cape Romanzof, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Ivanof Bay, Jakolof Bay, Kasilof, Pauloff Harbor, Russian Mission and Salamatof. Most of the place names in Alaska are of Alaska Native origin by such native groups as Alaskan Athabaskans, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Eskimo, Yupik and Aleut. We loved Alaska and never thought we would leave, however, the pressure to be with family when in your senior years is hard to ignore. We visit as often as we can. We were there last August. What I miss most is the wild beauty and the flying in that pristine last frontier. I sold my bush plane just before we moved to Indiana in 2003. I still fly with my son here in Indiana, but it is not the same. John Haynes
