"Guess" is the right word, Mike. That was a time when in any given week there were literally scores of great popular songs, e.g., "I'll Get By," "I'll Be Seeing You," "You Always Hurt the One You Love," and probably as many great performers, bands and small vocal groups and singles. Listening to the rubbish of today, can you imagine tomorrow's old folks looking back with pleasure?

Hey Fran,

Don't be TOO quick to judge. I'm in my 60s and in another 20 years, the good Lord willing, I hope I'll be thinking back with nostalgia to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the Who and the Eagles and other classic rock groups from my 1960s mis-spent youth. I'm guessing Mike may be of about the same vintage. And, yes, we'll probably be talking about the rubbish of today, which will eventually be someone else's golden oldies.

Well I'll just say that Fran had some good choices but none were the #1 song this particular week in 1944.

I don't think that popular music had gone entirely off the rails by the time you refer to. I remember the '60s as a time of updated country music, notably performed by groups like the Carpenters. Of course, I was still clinging to the songs of the '40s, as I do to this day. It's difficult to think of anyone waxing nostalgic about the rap rot of today. Wine and roses and "do it to me one more time"? Doesn't raise any goosebumps here.

Well it is a new day. Last night when I went outside it was a clear night to see Stars.

I don't know what the #1 song was, but I know what my favorite was and still is: "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and my favorite movie was "A Song to Remember" (I have a DVD of it) John Haynes

Len - "Pistol Packing Mama" by Bing Crosby is the correct Artist but not the right song.

Well we had some great songs mentioned but nobody gets the Liberty pass. Hope this brought back some fun memories. The #1 song this week in 1944 and stayed #1 for the next 9 weeks was Bing Crosby "Swinging On A Star". My Daddy was in the Armed Guard. A few years ago he asked me if I had ever heard Swinging on a Star. I had heard it but really never realized it was a song from the WWII era. I sent him the CD and it must have brought back all kinds of memories for him. Additionally, I was at a public auction in Hillsboro, MO this past weekend and a gentleman was wearing a baseball hat with "Armed Guard" across the front. I had a great conversation with him. He was excited that I recognized him as a member of the Armed Guard - he said not many people know of them.
