In September 2010, USS TAYLOR, a U.S. Navy frigate, became the first U.S. naval vessel to visit Murmansk since the end of World War II. The U.S. Consulate in St. Petersburg organized a variety of activities in Murmansk in honor of the 65th anniversary of the end of the war. Sailors from TAYLOR participated in official meetings and a wreath-laying ceremony, played soccer against a local team, planted trees with children from a Murmansk children's home and conducted tours of the ship for students. See a YouTube video at http://www.youtube.com/user/usconsulatespb#p/c/0/TEQH1CrEhy8. The text at this site is in Russian and some of the audio is Russian also, but it’s an interesting video. The video begins with images that apparently date from World War II.
Re: U.S. Navy vessel visits Murmansk, September 2010
Thanks Ron, I had just this morning viewed that same video sent by the U.S. Consulate in St. Petersburg via. Charles Lloyd. I had been invited to attend that function but had to cancel at the last minute. It appears that I may get another invitation to visit in August this year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first convoy to Murmansk, the “DIRVISH”, which arrived in Archangelsk on August 31, 1941. If I am invited, I plan to go if at all possible. John Haynes
